Sheehan Revved Up for Charlotte TA2 SpeedTour

Concord, NORTH CAROLINA – March 16, 2022 – Spring is on the way in the ‘Granite State’ of New Hampshire but it will nevertheless likely be warmer still nearly a thousand-miles south in North Carolina. Charlotte Motor Speedway is the destination for Tom Sheehan and the LTK Insulation Technologies Damon Racing team. They are set to compete in Round 2 of the 2022 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship, March 18-19.

Tom is a former recipient of the Trans Am “Ironman” Award and one of the most experienced drivers on the circuit, known for his durability and “never say quit” attitude. The TA2 field will consist of 33 cars at Charlotte this weekend. Tom is a regular in the top ten in TA2 and he’ll be looking to resume his place among the top drivers.

“I haven’t been to Charlotte, so it’s going to be new for me,” said Tom Sheehan. “It’s a new track as a part of the Championship. Then, we go on to Atlanta which will be our last TA2 race before Lime Rock.”

Tom went on to highlight a problem affecting a lot of teams when he added, “Parts shortages are hampering a lot of teams and have been since pre season. Key vendors can’t support the demands for parts from the TA2 field, even after the season opener.”

There are no easy rides in TA2 as Tom pointed out, “It’s a challenging time to be racing in TA2. It’s hard enough to have equipment race ready when you can get your stuff. It’s going to be tough with this back-to-back schedule. Atlanta is as far as I can see my team’s parts inventory taking us. Parts, fuel costs, and the travel burden the west coast presents, California and it’s back-to-back events is currently off the No. 97 schedule. On the plus side, the team has been working extremely hard. I’m just going to do my job and we’ll see what happens.”

Known as the “Home for American Racing” Charlotte Motor Speedway was designed and built by Bruton Smith and partner and driver Curtis Turner in 1959 and the first World 600 NASCAR race was held on June 19, 1960. This weekend Trans Am drivers will compete on the Roval of this famous facility. The Roval is a 2.25-mile road course that is both connected to and within the speedway’s main full-sized 1.5-mile quad oval. The final version of the Roval configuration was announced on January 22, 2018. The layout combines the 1.5-mile oval with the infield road-racing section over 17 turns. In 2019, the Roval’s backstretch chicane was redesigned, with an increase in width from 32 feet to 54 feet. The redesign requires heavier braking and a sharper entry, but allows better passing opportunities.

Tom and the No. 97 LTK Insulation Technologies Damon Racing Ford Mustang will get their first taste of the circuit with Testing at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday for testing with a second testing session scheduled for 3:50 p.m. the same day. Official practice is at 11:10 a.m. on Friday with qualifying in two groups from 2:20 p.m. that afternoon. The race itself is on Saturday at 12:40 p.m. on Saturday, March 19.
